We have to admit we were crazy curious when this collaboration in support of the victims of Typhoon Haiyan was announced. Meerkatsu teamed up with Gawakoto and Scramble to produce the artwork for this shirt (pre-order available through Monday, November 18th).
Bong Abad who owns and runs Gawakoto is a proud Filipino. Many of his designs are infused with the legend and culture of his heritage. He drew the jiu jitsu Kalabaw character applying a rear naked choke. The kalabaw is a water buffalo that is a national symbol of strength for Filipino people. I drew the demon character being choked out. Bong and I swapped art files by email back and forth until we could merge our two characters together as one. Matt Benyon, owner and chief designer of Scramble applied his deft touch with type and text. The whole piece took two long sleepless nights of work. We hope, as a design, it is something people will be proud to wear. To our knowledge, it is the first time three artists from the BJJ community have collaborated and merged our pen lines into one coherent piece.
Thanks to Seymour for publishing a bit of a behind the scenes look.
